The Noble Fir

The Noble Fir was discovered and introduced to this country in 1830 by the Scottish botanist, explorer and plant collector David Douglas. It was found growing in mountains on the north side of the Columbia River Gorge, in SW Canada where exceptional stands can still be found. The Noble Fir will ultimately grow to 60m and with its distinctive tall conical shape and fast growth of 1m per year, was initially planted as an important commercial timber crop in NW Europe.

The Noble fir's silvery blue young foliage contrasts with older greener needles and the tree has gained a new found popularity as one of the best Christmas trees grown commercially, because of its reluctance to drop its needles even in our centrally heated homes at this time of year.

Due to its high strength to weight ratio, in former times the wood of noble fir was used for Venetian blinds, veneers and was also used for ladder rails and aircraft construction.

Nowadays the Noble Fir is best known for producing high quality, distinctive blue foliage for use in Christmas Wreaths and floral displays, and that is where most of ours goes.

A Great Location For Growing

Tarrel's location, on prime agricultural land on Easter Ross's Tarbat Peninsula, makes it ideal for growing Noble Fir.  The fertile soil, mild micro-climate and moderate rainfall combine to provide excellent growing conditions.
