Build The Leader In You.

Leadership Skills Development For Managers

Leadership Training Expeditions - Aim, Objectives and Approach

Aim:

To provide an experience in which individuals can test, develop and refine their leadership skills in an unusual, challenging environment.

Objectives:

By the end of the Expedition, participants will be better able to:

  • Understand their own personal leadership style and how it impacts on other people
  • Take an "all-round" leadership approach, achieving a balanced focus on individuals, the task and team-effectiveness
  • Reflect on their leadership tactics and use a structured approach to identify learning points and make changes
  • Adopt a variety of leadership styles, dependent on the situation and its needs
  • Lead in challenging situations, when self-motivation and motivation of the team may be low
  • Deal with the anxiety that naturally comes from being outside one's "comfort zone" and rise to the challenge of new situations

Approach:

This course is based around a two-week expedition into the remote African bush.  Participants will travel in fully equipped four-wheel-drive vehicles, staying in a combination of remote campsites and safari-lodges.  Participants will be expected to take turns in leading the expedition, though experienced facilitators and field guides will be available for advice and support when needed.  The facilitators will lead evening discussion sessions in order to reflect on the leadership and team-working lessons identified during the day.  Established models of leadership (e.g. Blanchard's "Situational Leadership" and Adair's "Action-Centred Leadership") will be used to interpret your day-by-day experiences and relate these to the business environment.

A typical day will include:

  • Making and breaking camp, including pitching of tents, organising the camp kitchen and setting the camp fire
  • Setting daily travel objectives, route-planning and navigation
  • Overland driving, frequently on challenging off-road terrain
  • Food preparation
  • Organising supplies and planning supply stop-overs
  • Facilitated evening review sessions round the fire
  • Personal reflection and completion of journals

During the expedition we will take the opportunity to enjoy the magnificent wilderness through which we are travelling.  This includes spectacular game-viewing, photo-opportunities and Rest-and Relaxation stop-overs.
