Anything else you need to know? Email us with your question or see our contacts page for other ways to get in touch. (Back) to Leadership Training Expeditions... We suggest you read through the Learning Objectives page but, in summary, you will learn a lot about yourself and how you interact with other people in unfamiliar and challenging situations. We will also learn about tenacity and mental toughness. We will do this by taking on and achieving the challenges of the expedition, and by observing local cultures and the wildlife in their attempts to make the best of their environment. On a practical level, you will have the opportunity to try out leadership techniques “in the raw”, without the constraints of corporate procedures and office politics, to see what works for you and what doesn’t.
Why go all the way to Africa for a course? We believe our expedition is not just a training course, but a journey of self-discovery. We know of no better location to provide exposure to practical outdoor challenges, insights into new and different cultures and a separation from all that is normal and everyday, while achieving all this in a risk-managed environment. Off-road driving in remote terrain carries an inherent risk, however, we will be travelling as a well-equipped group and both your Field Guide and Facilitator are experienced at bush travel. Danger from animals can be avoided with a few simple precautions, particularly at night. You will learn about these during the pre-briefing session. In addition we will aim to minimise risk in the following ways:
What is your view on Sustainable Travel? This is a very important issue for us. Apart from transcontinental flights, we use only services provided by small-to-medium sized indigenous companies or local Government operations (such as national parks), thus contributing directly to the local economy. Many of the areas we will travel through are managed for nature conservation by locally organised initiatives (e.g Botswana's Khama Rhino Sanctuary). During the expedition we aim to stop off and provide support to local development projects, such as schools or health care centres, though this is subject to local arrangements and agreements at the time.
What driving skills will I need? It is not absolutely essential that you are able to drive, although we will be travelling two to a vehicle, so at least 50% of the team must be drivers. If vehicle occupants can share the driving it will make the expedition much more enjoyable and rewarding. It would certainly help if you have done some off-road driving but this is not essential, as a familiarisation session in off-road driving and recovery techniques will be provided en-route.
What health precautions / vaccinations should I take? We always recommend that you take advice from your General Practitioner or local travel clinic. However, in general, you will need to be protected against:
We will be travelling to a borderline Malaria area, though risk is low at the times of year that we travel (dry season). Again, take medical advice before you leave. HIV/AIDS is widespread throughout the Southern African region, but is unlikely to be an issue for us. However, individuals are advised to exercise common-sense and caution during free time.
It is absolutely essential that you organise comprehensive travel insurance including medical evacuation option. This is not included in the course fee and you can't just dial "999" in the bush!
We will be travelling during the South African winter. This means dry, clear conditions most of the time, with temperatures around mid 20's during the day, but potentially very cold at night. Expect to get dirty and dusty during the remote area sections, and bring smart casual clothes for the hotel and lodge stays (see sample itinerary) All camping equipment, tents and bedding will be provided. A full kit list will be provided with your joining instructions.
Is there any pre-work required? Flights to and from Johannesburg are not included, as we find that individuals can often pick up their own deals and offers locally. As a guide, expect to pay around £500 (700 Euro) return from London, UK.
